Abstract

The growing inclusion of wild animals as companion animals has intensified discussions on anthropomorphism in human–animal relationships. This essay critically examines the psychological, biological, and ethical implications of anthropomorphism in wild pets by integrating evidence from Psychology, Ethology, Veterinary Medicine, Animal Welfare Science, and Animal Ethics. The literature indicates that anthropomorphism is a natural cognitive process that can strengthen emotional bonds and foster empathy, and should not be regarded as either pathological or inherently harmful. However, when it guides animal management, it may promote practices that conflict with species-specific physiological, behavioral, and cognitive needs. From this perspective, animal welfare emerges as the primary criterion for evaluating the quality of care, shifting the focus from the owner's intentions to the effects of management on the animal. It is concluded that responsible ownership of wild pets depends on balancing the human–animal bond with respect for species-specific needs through scientifically informed care.
